Vitamin D Functions
Vitamin D plays an important role in the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism as a steroid hormone. We obtain vitamin D from exposure to sunlight, as well as (as a fat-soluble vitamin) from food products and supplementation. There are two forms of vitamin D: vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Vitamin D3 is synthesized endogenously in the skin and occurs naturally in fatty fish and cod liver oil. And did you know that vitamin D deficiency is a major global problem across all age groups (Charoenngam et al., 2019)? This is related to e.g. with environmental factors limiting exposure to sunlight, which is necessary for the endogenous synthesis of vitamin D in the skin.
Why is vitamin D so important?
The answer is simple! It is a vitamin that participates in various physiological processes that take place in our body. First of all, immunity should be mentioned – vitamin D helps in the proper functioning of the immune system. In addition (as already mentioned above), it supports the proper absorption or use of calcium and phosphorus and maintains the proper level of calcium in the blood. It is also related to maintaining healthy bones. In addition, vitamin D helps in the proper functioning of muscles and in maintaining healthy teeth. It also takes part in the process of cell division.
Are you a physically active person?
The author of a scientific publication on the impact of vitamin D on sports performance (Bubbs, 2015) suggests that the latest research draws attention to the potential role of vitamin D in sports performance and regeneration, among others. through its participation in protein metabolism, muscle function, or its influence on the regulation of lean muscle mass. In turn, other authors (Dahlquist, Dieter, Koehle) in their 2015 work on the probable ergogenic effect of vitamin D on athletic performance and regeneration, concluded that vitamin D supplementation may have ergogenic potential by increasing endogenous testosterone production.
